Scientific Objectives

The scientific objectives of the IDAF programme are defined by the DEBITS committee:

- To study the chemical composition of the atmosphere in Africa:

  • to document the temporal and spatial evolution of trace gas and aerosol concentrations and to analyze weekly, seasonal and inter annual variability of these concentrations using a coupled experimental and modeling approach

- To study wet and dry atmospheric deposition:

  • quantification of wet and dry deposition using quality controlled measurements at the regional-ecosystem scale
  • identification of the key processes regulating deposition
  • development of new parameterizations for regional and global atmospheric chemistry models.

- To study the impacts of:

  • aerosol radiative forcing at the African scale
  • aerosol on natural ecosystems: water, vegetation, soils (acidification, nitrogen cycle, etc), hydrology and human health
